In 2001, we were introduced to a young Thomas Paine Kydd. I was introduced to him not long after, when the first of the Thomas Kydd series was made available as an audiobook. Through the whole series, we have had the privilege of listening to the Kydd story as it has been read to us by one of the audiobook world’s best narrators, Christian Rodska.
Listening/reading order of the series: for anyone interested in naval historical fiction, this series is unquestionably a must. Having had the privilege of listening to the Kydd books from the very first, I have no doubt as to the correct reading order: as the song says, “Let’s start at the very beginning!”. To approach it in any other way would, in my view, diminish the experience and make it difficult at times to follow the thread in both the storyline and the fictional biography of our main protagonist, Kydd. So, if you’re reading this but have not yet had the privilege of reading or listening to any of the 25 books comprising this series so far, you have a truly binge-worthy collection available on MAM to keep you busy for many enjoyable and absorbing hours.
In the first of the series, Kydd was a Parrucchiere (wig maker) from Guildford, with no connection to the sea. However, he was illegally snatched by a press gang to become a landsman in the Royal Navy. Now, not quite a quarter-century later, our angry, young, frightened young man, altogether ignorant of the ways of the seas and determined to run at the first opportunity, has become the first a “tarpaulin” officer and developed into a respected, intrepid and brilliant captain in the vein of Rodney, St Vincent, Nelson, Collingswood, Pellew and other naval heroes of the age of sail. As a fictional officer, he is quite at home in the company of the likes of Hornblower, Aubrey, Bolitho and Ramage. Long may he (and his author!) live and may we be regaled by his adventures as he climbs the promotional ladder to Admiral of the White or even Admiral of the Fleet!
Synopsis
1812. Off the coast of Brazil, HMS Java, a proud British 38-gun frigate, is captured in battle by the American USS Constitution – signalling across the world’s oceans a challenge to Britain’s naval premiership that cannot be ignored.
Back in England Captain Sir Thomas Kydd is enjoying a moment of normal life with his wife and his new-born son. With his Thunderer in dock receiving some well-earned repairs he is, momentarily, without a command. It’s a position the Admiralty does not leave him in for long, and he is soon given a mission: engage the young republic in a fair fight, frigate against frigate, and restore the Navy’s reputation. And they have just the ship and crew for him . . . Tyger.
But on reaching the US east coast, Kydd and his trusted Tygers realise that the hardest part of their mission will be drawing out one of the Yankee men-o’-war to engage in battle – especially once the Americans get wind of his purpose. It’s a tall order, requiring every ounce of the crew’s guile and persistence – and when fortune turns against them, Kydd finds not only his career, but his life, hanging in the balance.
