In the 1960s, frustrated by the growing problem of urban pollution, Athelstan Spilhaus, a visionary scientist and futurist comic strip writer, assembled a team of experts to develop a bold experiment: the Minnesota Experimental City (MXC).
MXC would be the city of the future, a domed metropolis for 250,000 pioneering residents, built from scratch and using cutting-edge technology to prevent urban sprawl and and eradicate the excessive pollution and waste levels typical in contemporary cityscapes. Overcrowding, pollution, and sprawl would be addressed through self-driving roads, waste management reprocessing, modular housing, and underground tunnels for utilities, while a huge geodesic dome could regulate climate.
This new city would employ the newest technologies in an attempt to create more livable cities for the 21st Century. It was a compelling vision, with powerful backers, hundreds of experts, and its own state agency.
But times were changing, and not everyone fell in line with this newfangled vision for the future. The Minnesota Experimental City (MXC) was never built. Optimistic dreams of the 1960s waned, and the people of Swatara, Minnesota, were not thrilled about having their local landscapes dug up for a space age metropolis and its nuclear power plant.
Ultimately, even in an era of moon landings and Cold War ballistics, its $10 billion price tag tanked it, as did its inability to connect with the local community. MXC lost its state funding in 1973, and Minnesota never got a domed city. Even there, it became a footnote in midcentury history, as explored in Chad Freidrichs’ fascinating look back at the would-be city of tomorrow. Director Freidrichs delved into archives of audio recordings, film reels, photographs, and conceptual drawings to revisit MXC, and interviewed its participants and protestors.
The Experimental City recalls this now obscure project as a moment when science was seriously considered as an answer to our city’s problems, and utopia was a place that people believed they could build.
