The true stories behind famous pirates, beginning with Francis Drake, famous for an expedition that was supposedly a voyage of discovery but was also a covert raiding mission and the start of England’s challenge to the global domination of Spain and Portugal.

Chapter 2: The Tale of Grace O’Malley
The story of Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen of Ireland, who defied gender conventions to become the most feared and respected leader of both the land and the sea.

Chapter 3: The Tale of John Ward
The story of Englishman John Ward, who became tired of the drudgery and poverty of the English Navy. At the age of 50 he started a remarkable ascent from petty pirate to notorious menace on the Mediterranean Sea, converting to Islam and becoming a wealthy overlord in the Ottoman Empire.

Chapter 4: The Tale of Henry Morgan
The story of Henry Morgan, whose time as a pirate was punished with a stint in the Tower of London. However, this was followed by a promotion to Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica.

Chapter 5: William Kidd
The story of William Kidd, a pirate hunter who – when the legitimate prizes of the Red Sea were not to be found – quickly turned to becoming a pirate himself. An unpopular captain, he frantically chased treasure and status until his fateful trial for murder.

Chapter 6: Blackbeard
The story of history’s most notorious pirate, Blackbeard. Born Edward Teach in England, he was an 18th century pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain’s North American colonies. He gained momentum through the Caribbean, before blockading Charleston and fighting a bloody battle.

Chapter 7: Anne Bonny and Mary Read
The voyages and exploits of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, who formed a troublesome trio with Calico Jack. Together they successfully robbed ships and lived off the spoils of the sea before being eventually captured by pirate hunters and tried for piracy.

Chapter 8: The Tale of Bartholomew Roberts
The voyages and exploits of Bartholomew Roberts, aka Black Bart, the most successful pirate of the Golden Age. His piracy almost brought West Indies trade to a standstill until he was hunted down by the English crown.
