The parish garden in a sleepy English village of Repton hides an archaeological mystery. The area, located in central England, is full of ancient tombs that were discovered more than 40 years ago.
A mighty army invaded the British Isles in the 9th century and the soldiers overthrew the English kings. Archaeologists are hunting for the remains of one of the largest armies ever to invade Britain. In the 9th Century, thousands of Vikings stormed these shores, but left little evidence of their bloody occupation.
When a mass grave with the remains of almost 300 people was discovered in an English village, no one initially knew who these people were. Many of the bones showed signs of serious battle injuries.
Archaeologists have been studying the Repton area for decades. As early as the 1970s, significant discoveries were made. Evidence has accumulated, including female warriors and a lost king buried with his son.
Bioarchaeologist Cat Jarman believes these bones are the last remains of the “Great Heathen Army,” a legendary Viking fighting force that once invaded England. The group plundered and conquered much of England in the late 9th century.
In search of this lost army and armed with the latest scientific methods, Cat’s team reopens the gruesome mystery of a mass grave found under a Derbyshire vicarage lawn, to forensically piece together human stories from the front line, including evidence of women warriors and a lost king reunited with his son in death.
They also unearth new evidence of a massive encampment, in what looks set to become one of the most significant Viking sites ever discovered in Britain. The historical documentary Lost Viking Army follows the archaeological excavations of the graves and the study of the remains.
