Companion TV documentary to the National Geographic Magazine article “The Last Dive of I-52” – October 1999 issue.
During World War II, the Japanese submarine I-52 sank by Allied planes in 1944, in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean some 1500 miles off the coast of West Africa, carrying over a hundred crew and a cargo of 2 tons of gold. Decades later, Paul Tidwell, a war veteran and adventurer, attempts to unravel the mystery of the disaster by embarking on an underwater search for the missing ship and the priceless treasure aboard.
When it sank in the deep Atlantic during World War II, the Japanese submarine I-52 went to the bottom with over 100 lives… and cargo that included two tons of gold. Now, Tidwell bucks the odds on a long-shot mission to solve a tantalizing mystery more than 50 years old, as he embarks on a deep-see search for a lost submarine and its cargo of gold.
Plunge three miles to the ocean floor, and explore the sub’s twisted remains in an effort to locate the shipment of gold. Be privy to declassified intelligence reports that reveal how WWII code breakers helped track down sub I-52. Be there as US Navy veterans retell stories of their mission to hunt down and sink this Japanese warship.
National Geographic will take you deep into the ocean to search the wrecked remains of the submarine and locate the gold shipment. You’ll witness the deciphering of an intelligence report, revealing how cryptologists of the time helped track down the I-52.
Included: Paul Tidwell’s research, beginning in Washington, D.C., in 1944; a 1998 excursion from the Canary Islands and several dives trying to find the gold.
