Pals battalions were a uniquely British phenomenon. Britain was the only major power not to begin the First World War with a mass conscripted army. After the war broke out, it quickly became clear that the small professional British Army was not large enough for a global conflict.
Men and boys from towns and villages across the UK were encouraged to join and fight together – an army that would be decimated in the fields of the Western Front. In a wave of patriotic fervour, thousands of men volunteered for service in Lord Kitchener’s New Armies. As part of this, it was realised that local ties could be harnessed for national gain. Many more men would enlist if they could serve alongside their friends, relatives and workmates. This film tells the epic story of the young men who joined up together, fought together and died together in the Pals battalions of Kitchener’s Army in World War One.
Illustrated by a wealth of archive footage, the programme draws on a unique collection of filmed interviews with veterans in their nineties and hundreds who vividly remember how they volunteered with their friends in the first days of war to serve in Kitchener’s Army and the Pals Battalions. They relive the heroism and heartbreak of the pals in the trenches who went over the top together.
On the centenary of the war to end all wars, this is a fitting tribute to a generation of young men distinguished by their sense of patriotism, duty, friendship, loyalty and courage.
