English | Documentary | Size: 2.01 GB
The Trojan War: a universal myth, celebrated by the oldest known poet: Homer. A ten-year war, with its legendary heroes: Helen, Agamemnon, Priam, Hector, Odysseus, and Achilles… What if this war had really taken place?
For centuries, the Trojan War was considered a myth, a story of the siege and eventual destruction of the ancient city of Troy. However, archaeological excavations conducted in Turkey in the second half of the 19th century yielded surprising discoveries. Heinrich Schliemann discovered the so-called Priam’s Treasure, which indicated the existence of an advanced civilization during the period described by Homer.
Lost Cities of the Trojans is a groundbreaking present-day archaeological investigation-lead documentary with exclusive access to two major archaeological sites and their research leaders, which uncovers brand new information about the myth of the Trojan War and the destiny of the Trojan warriors.
In 1870, the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann began excavating the hill of Hisarlik in Turkey. There, he discovered the ruins of an ancient citadel and, hidden in a corner of the wall, an extraordinary treasure: he was certain that this citadel was Troy, and this treasure, that of King Priam. Since then, dozens of archaeologists have worked on the small hill of Hisarlik, the most extensively excavated archaeological site in Asia Minor, whose summit has lost fifteen meters in altitude due to successive excavations.
Throughout the 20th century, these archaeologists applied the most advanced scientific methods of their time to unlock its secrets. We now know that Schliemann’s Treasure is far too old to be that of King Priam. And yet: each excavation campaign reveals new and intriguing elements, which seem to confirm that Homer’s poem was indeed inspired by a real war, the battles of which took place here, on the border between Europe and Asia.
In the infamous tale of Homer, the beautiful Helene is abducted by Pâris, prince of Troy, triggering the great furor of her husband Menelas, who besieges Troy. The city holds for ten years, before surrending to the subterfuge of Ulysses – the Trojan Horse. But haunting questions remain. Where did the Trojan War take place? Who were the Trojans? Why did the Greeks fight them? What happened to the survivors? Archaeologist Rüstem Aslan has been working on the site of Hissarlik in Turkey, where he identified the siege of ancient Troy. He discovered not only one, but nine ancient cities, built through the years one on top of the other.
Explorations conducted on the other side of the Aegean Sea, in Greece, by the archaeologist Elena Korka have identified the remains of another mythical city, which legend says was founded by the last Trojans: Tenea. Is this further proof that Trojan civilization persisted throughout antiquity after the city’s fall?
Now, the filmmakers and investigators explore incredible new evidence and present the latest archaeological discoveries that may uncover the truth behind the history and fabled tale of the Trojan War. This film tells the story of this dual quest: that of a science in development, constantly perfecting its methods, while groping for the elements of truth in a myth over 3000 years old.
