An epic adventure and passionate romance unfold against the panorama of a frontier wilderness ravaged by war.
The year is 1757. In the North American colonies, the war between the French and the English is raging, and both sides are recruiting Native American warriors for the battles. When sisters Cora and Alice arrive in the new country on their way to their father, Colonel Munro, they are ambushed and survive only thanks to Hawkeye – a European who grew up as an Indian among the Mohican tribe. He escorts the sisters to Fort Williams and along the way falls in love with Cora. But when they reach the fort, it is besieged by the French – and then the final battle for survival can begin.
American auteur Michael Mann had a string of successes on television, having made a name for himself on projects such as “Starsky and Hutch” and “Police Story”, he then turned to directing films. The TV movie called “The Jericho Mile” won three Emmy awards and opened the gateway to Hollywood; “Thief”, “The Keep” and “Manhunter” followed, turning Mann into one of the more interesting filmmakers. What the director chose to do next, however, was somewhat surprising. The old 1936 film version of “The Last of the Mohicans”, based on James Fenimore Cooper’s book of the same name from 1826, was one of director Mann’s favorite films as a child and he thought for a long time about making his own version of it. Eventually, he got to work on it and filming started in the summer of 1991. The film was supposed to be released in the early summer of 1992, but when the first cut versions of the film were about three hours long, the studio forced Mann to condense the film into two hours. Reluctantly, Mann agreed and finally “The Last of the Mohicans” had its world premiere on August 26, 1992. The film was a big success that won the critics over, as well as the Oscar for the best sound mixing.
Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor in 1989 for My Left Foot) stars as Hawkeye, rugged frontiersman and adopted son of the Mohicans, and Madeleine Stowe is Cora Munro, aristocratic daughter of a proud British Colonel. Their love, tested by fate, blazes amidst a brutal conflict between the British, the French and Native American allies that engulfs the majestic mountains and cathedral-like forests of Colonial America. Based on the American literary classic by James Fenimore Cooper, “The Last of the Mohicans” is “a spellbindingly beautiful, old-fashioned epic.”
In “Making The Last of the Mohicans” we go behind-the-scenes in three-part making-of-documentary, including the training sessions for Daniel Day-Lewis. Day-Lewis is famous for going full method with his roles, and Hawkeye of The Last of the Mohicans was no exception. Day-Lewis lived rough, hunted his own food to prepare for playing Hawkeye. Feature covers the entire production from script to final movie, the casting, training, set construction, cinematography, and music.
