It’s Tulsa time. Recorded live in June of 1979 at Leon Russell’s Paradise Studios in Los Angeles, this 21 track session burns slow and low. The occasion? None other than the release of Cale’s fifth record, and first LP in three years, the aptly titled, 5.
There are encounters that seem discreet on the surface, but which actually conceal a quiet grandeur. This 1979 concert by JJ Cale and Leon Russell isn’t a massive or visually spectacular show, but it is a meeting of two musical minds who understand groove as a natural language. Here, less is more. and that changes everything.
Guitarist and singer / songwriter JJ Cale is a mysterious man. Although he wrote big hits for Eric Clapton (Cocaine, After Midnight) and is admired by many guitarists, hardly anyone knows his face. He doesn’t tour, and between his albums he prefers to stay in his caravan in the countryside.
Now reluctant rock hero J.J. Cale takes the spotlight for this 80-minute session, virtually unseen until 2001. The reclusive, Oklahoma-born Cale is probably best known for writing songs made famous by others (“After Midnight” and “Cocaine” by Eric Clapton, “Call Me the Breeze” by Lynyrd Skynyrd). Those are among the some two dozen tunes heard here, as is Cale’s own minor hit, “Crazy Mama.”
The gently grooving music is a brilliant mix of rock, blues, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, country, and bluegrass. The atmosphere is completely intimate. Recorded at Paradise Studios in Los Angeles, the setting feels close, almost as if the viewer were inside the studio, observing a session between musicians who don’t need to prove anything. From the very beginning, an absolute naturalness is perceived: there are no poses, no artifice, just music flowing.
JJ Cale moves with that characteristic calm that defines his style. His smooth voice and relaxed guitar set the pulse of songs like “Cocaine” and “After Midnight,” which here feel even more organic. He doesn’t seek to impress, but to envelop the listener. And he achieves this with an ease that only the greats possess.
For his part, Leon Russell brings a different but perfectly complementary energy. Their presence adds a richer dimension to the sound, with touches of blues, rock, and gospel that elevate each performance without disrupting the minimalist essence of the show. The chemistry between them needs no explanation: it simply happens.
The sound is raw, honest, without unnecessary embellishment. Each instrument occupies its space clearly, allowing the music to breathe. It’s the kind of concert where you appreciate every detail, every pause, every subtle variation that might go unnoticed in other contexts.
Seeing this concert is to understand the beauty of simplicity. It’s a lesson in style, in musical identity, and in how authenticity can be far more powerful than any massive production. An essential experience for those who value the pure essence of sound.
See two legends connected: The chemistry between JJ Cale and Leon Russell is authentic and organic. Appreciate well-executed simplicity: Fewer elements, but greater musical depth. Discover JJ Cale’s style: A relaxed approach that influenced generations of musicians.
This video is the most intimate look at JJ Cale ever. Recorded in 1979 at the Paradise Studios in Los Angeles this rare and unique session with Leon Russell on keyboards, has never been seen before and gives fans the chance to see this unique talent at work in the studio. Enjoy the essence of groove: A relaxed sound that flows naturally and envelopingly. Experience a unique document: A session that captures the true essence of the moment.
