CGMA 2D Academy – 2D Animation Body Mechanics with Liane-Cho Han

CGMA 2D Academy – 2D Animation: Body Mechanics with Liane-Cho Han
English | Size: 5.7GB
Category: Tutorial

This course will focus understanding the body mechanics behind a 2D character animation in a realistic and semi-realistic style. We will begin with some of the most important foundation of animation, understanding the concept of weight shifting through walk cycles and other movements analysis exercises. Once students understood and practiced weight shifting, they will learn how to add personality in a walk.

All the principles learnt and practiced in this class, can be transferred and applied to 3D animation.

In this class students will learn how to draw in a rough but structured way and learn principles to increase workflow efficiency to get them ready for a production pipeline set up.

Pre-requisites:
Solid figure drawing foundation or analytical figure drawing and fundamental of character design classes. To fully benefit from this class, it is strongly recommended to have taken at least one 2D animation class before to taking this course.

The 2nd part of this class will focus on acting and lip sync for 2D animation. To get more information on this class, please email us at [email protected]

Materials needed:
If taken traditionally:

Animation paper
Pencils
Animation peg bar
A scanner to submit your work

If taken digitally:

Animation software like TVpaint or flash
A Wacom tablet, Cintiq or equivalent

Course Outline:

Wk1 – Animation Basics – In this first week, students will the learn the principles of Spacing, Overlap and Timing with very simple shapes, so they can focus more on the basics of animation.
Wk2 – Observation & Drawing Keys – Observation is the essence of animation. Drawing in a rough, synthetic but still clear and dynamic way is vital when creating a 2D animation. Students will learn how to decompose movements by identifying and drawing important keys from a dynamic movement observed from a video reference.
Wk3 – PART 1 | Walk Cycles – This week, students will begin learning how to animate walk cycles in a realistic way and understand how a character uses his weight to walk. These walk cycles will be animated from different angles: profile, face, ¾ face. Walk cycles are one of the most basic things to animate but also one of the hardest to do right.
Wk4 – PART 2 | Walk Cycles – This week, students will continue learning how to animate walk cycles in a realistic way and understand how a character uses his weight to walk. These walk cycles will be animated from different angles: profile, face, ¾ face. Walk cycles are one of the most basic things to animate but also one of the hardest to do right.
Wk5 – Weight Shifting – In this week, students will learn about the correlation of the weight and size of a character and his center of gravity shift when moving. We will practice by animating a character going from a sitting to a standing position.
Wk6 – Introduction to Acting – This is Part-1 of a 3-Part course conclusion. Students will be introduced to the concept of acting by adding personality to a walk cycle. Students will animate a walk from 2 different angles using an existing character (model sheets will be provided). This weeks exercise will focus on posing.
Wk7 – Introduction to Acting – This is Part-2 of a 3-Part course conclusion. Students will continue the concept of acting by adding personality to a walk cycle. Students will animate a walk from 2 different angles using an existing character (model sheets will be provided). For the 2nd part, we will focus on the 1st rough pass.
Wk8 – Introduction to Acting – This is Part-3 of a 3-Part course conclusion. Students will continue the concept of acting by adding personality to a walk cycle. Students will conclude the animated walk from 2 different angles using an existing character (model sheets will be provided). For the 3rd and part, we will focus on tying down/cleaning the animation for final presentation.
