English | Documentary | Size: 4.60 GB
Britain’s National Parks are a haven for nature. Established in 1949 as part of Britain’s post war reconstruction, the parks encompass some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes within Wales, Scotland and England. This is a look at four of Britain’s 15 national parks, capturing these unique places and meeting the people who live and work in the New Forest, Pembrokeshire Coast, Dartmoor and Northumberland.
Part 1: New Forest
Once a royal hunting ground for William the Conqueror, the New Forest is now a unique mosaic of open heathlands, ancient woodlands, coastline and picturesque villages. The national park is home to the New Forest’s famous ponies, deer, rare bird species and reptiles. The traditional grazing practices of generations of commoners sustain this unique landscape, with their ponies and pigs roaming freely throughout the park.
Part 2: Pembrokeshire Coast
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park offers breathtaking views of rugged shorelines, sandy beaches, and offshore islands. The Park is home to numerous seabird colonies, including guillemots and the endangered puffin, and the park’s many bays provide a safe haven for grey seals and their pups. Beyond the coast, a diverse landscape of marshes, with salt and freshwater meadows support a variety of rare mammals and birds.
Part 3: Dartmoor
Steeped in myth and untamed beauty, Dartmoor National Park’s vast moorlands, characterised by open heathland, grassy hills and striking granite tors, provide a a sanctuary for rare plant and animal species as well as a treasure trove for archaeologists. Rivers meandering through the moors are home to salmon, otters and kingfishers, and peatlands host rare plants like the carnivorous sundew.
Part 4: Northumberland
The Northumberland National Park is characterised by a unique landscape of wild moors, gentle hills and deep valleys criss-crossed by clear rivers. Its western border adjoins Kielder Forest, one of the largest man-made forests in Europe. This vast natural expanse is a haven for numerous bird species, including the osprey, once extinct in the UK but now returning annually from Africa to breed. The park is also rich in history, including extensive stretches of Hadrian’s Wall.
