The history of the Trojan horse is probably one of the most famous stories ever told.
A gigantic wooden horse is loaded with Greek soldiers and presented to the Trojans as a gift. Unsuspecting, they swallow the bait and pull the horse into the city. Under cover of darkness the Greeks slip out of the horse and open the gates to their comrades. Only hours later the mighty Troy goes up in flames.
The fall of Troy – one of the most mysterious stories ever told. The city of Troy lay on the Dardanelles, the only sea route between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. An important trade route in the late Bronze Age. At that time, Troy controlled shipping, levied taxes and became a thriving metropolis. A war brought Troy to its downfall. It was fought with the Greeks for a woman, according to legend.
After more than ten long years of siege, the Greeks pretended to break off the war and boarded their ships. They left the Trojans, it is said, a gift: a huge wooden horse. But in the belly of the horse sat Odysseus and the best Greek warriors. Unsuspecting, the Trojans pulled the horse into their city. The material for the horse could have come from the ships of the warriors who had fallen in battle against Troy. Their galleys probably lay deserted and rotten on the beach. Researchers estimate the horse to weigh around five tons, close to a nine meters high and about eleven meters long.
In Homer’s epics, the ten-year war against the Greeks ends Troy’s heyday. Did a great war really seal the end of the city or was it rather a long series of grueling battles? The myth of the Trojan Horse persists to this day.
But what if the myth of the horse is not true at all? New, groundbreaking findings show that one of the most famous stories of all time will probably have to be rewritten. The Trojan horse was probably not a horse at all. But then how did the Greeks outwit their enemies? And what history will we find in the history books in the future?
