DIY EDM mastering for the home producer

Mastering music has always had a veil of mystery around it. Here is where you can learn that mastering electronic music isn’t a form of black magic or voodoo that only the top engineers in the world are taught. In fact, mastering EDM can be done perfectly well from the home studio.

In the early nineties I got a job as a junior mastering engineer at the recordplant in my hometown, CBS Records. It later became Sony Music and is now Record Industry.

As a complete rookie a whole new world opened up for me, I got to learn so many things about audio from what later turned out to be the best audio engineers in the country at that time. I had no idea, but man was I lucky!

I remember hearing what a compressor did for the first time and being amazed at the difference it made. I noticed that I could spot even the slightest difference in dynamic range and EQ, and what tubes and tape could do to the vibe of a recording, even after the fact.

It was during this job that I got my first recorddeal with Rhythm Records, and I decided to choose that path. This started a career for me as producer and DJ that lasts until today.

Working in my own little damp studio I could apply so much of the knowledge that I mined in my work as mastering engineer and deliver solid sounding productions and masters.

I’m here to tell you that all the mystique that surrounds mastering can be unveiled and explained using simple principles and tricks. It really isn’t the black art that people make it out to be. I created a course specifically for that: YOU can master EDM!

EDM in the widest sense of course; Electronic Dance Music.

If you struggle with making your masters sound up to par, this course is for you.

This course sets out to teach you how to do your DIY mastering in easy to follow explanations.

Olav Basoski is the “grand seigneur” of Dutch house music. Anyone who has heard him play one of his firing sets across the globe has been overwhelmed by his ability to lock a dancefloor into a groove for hours on end.

Olav Basoski stood at the crib of the international house scene and has been on top of it ever since. Being the leading man behind the infamous Dutch label Work Records in the 1990’s he’s released one true classic after another. Think Pancake – “Don’t turn your back”, think Sil – “Windows”, or “Opium Scumbagz”, the #1 Ibiza anthem of 2000 under his own name on Defected Records, not to mention one of the most sought after house music vinyl series ever produced, “Samplitude”, comprising over 50 tracks in all.

And it doesn’t stop there. Olav’s remix discography is astounding, well over a hundred! From Moby to James Brown, from Bob Marley to Bingo Players and from Armin van Buuren to Todd Terry to Sander van Doorn, everyone has called him in for help.

In 2005 Olav releases his “Waterman” and again all hell breaks loose. The record gets released in almost 25 countries, tops every chart all over the world and reaches ‘gold’ status on vinyl alone, a rare feat these days.

His DJ sets have gained him a reputation of being one of the

most respected key players in the scene.
