An intimate portrait of a group of very different suicide bombers working for Al Qaeda in Syria. Norwegian journalist and documentary filmmaker Paul Salahadin Refsdal’s latest film offers a rare and shocking insight into the day to-day-lives of men preparing to become Al Qaeda suicide bombers. From the Saudi who loves singing and fried chicken, to a 26-year-old white British convert who worries a lot about his new wife, this remarkable film embeds with an unlikely bunch of “martyrdom seekers”, each waiting for their turn to go on a final mission, known by Jihadis as ‘Dugma’.
Tires of the truck have been shielded with metal plates. The bumper is covered with a net and shielding. The back is loaded with explosives. Abu Qaswara is clearly proud to be able to present everything to the camera. He could very well be presenting any feature of any car.
Dugma: The Button is a documentary following the fighters of Syrian Jabhat al-Nusra, a militant group that once belonged to al-Qaeda. Many of the fighters come from abroad; all of them wait for their chance at martyrdom. They are ready to kill and ready to die.
Norwegian director Paul Salahadin Refsdal succeeds in maintaining a neutral tone throughout his film. He presents the members of al-Qaeda as persons, as humans. We see Abu Qaswara praising the fried chicken of his favourite joint. Later he recollects the moments of happiness he felt at the wheel of an explosive truck. That particular suicide attack did not succeed.
The film has raised ethical issues with broadcasters disturbed by its subjects and content. Refsdal spent six weeks embedded with members of Al nusra Front, the syrian branch of the extremist organisation in the war-ravaged Levantine nation. The result is the film DUGMA: THE BUTTON, which chronicles the day-to-day lives of four would-be suicide bombers and unravels their motivations. Documentary doesn’t choke us with the standard view of absolute good and absolute evil. A war against the army of a tyrant is fought by people with mixed motives. Amongst them are these men, whose view of freedom would be tyranny to others.
Paul Salahadin Refsdal is a journalist-turned-documentary filmmaker. After leaving the Norwegian army in 1984, he went to Afghanistan to report on the Mujahedin fighting Soviet occupation. In the following decades Refsdal reported on about a dozen insurgent groups including the KLA in Kosovo, the Tamil Tigers, the Shining Path of Peru, the Chechen rebels, the Afghan Taliban and the Syrian branch of al-Qaida. Refsdal was kidnapped by the Taliban in 2009 while working on a film. He later made Captured by Taliban (2010), which was shown internationally in a slightly different version entitled Taliban: Behind the Masks.
