A World War II enigma that happened in the Libyan desert: ‘Lady Be Good’: the ghost bomber who landed alone and was missing for 16 years
A lost WWII bomber and the crew’s futile trek through the Calanshio Sand Sea. GHOST PLANE OF THE DESERT tells the tragic story of the World War II-era B-24 Liberator bomber “Lady Be Good”, which mysteriously disappeared after its first bombing mission over Naples, Italy in April 1943. The plane was discovered 15 years later, without its crew, in the Libyan desert 400 miles south of its air base.
April 4, 1943–25 B-24 Liberators take off from their base in Libya on a bombing mission to Italy, but only 24 return. In 1959, a British survey team discovers a plane, deep in the desert. Using the diary of two crewmembers, along with the crew’s remains,we learn of their struggle to cross 100 miles of desert, without food or water.
The documentary investigates the fate of the missing plane and its crew of nine. Interviews with the surveyors, who in 1959 discovered the plane wreck but no human remains, some 400 miles off course in the African desert, only add to the mystery. Archival film footage, photographs, and personal accounts tell the story of the ghost plane of the desert.
