David Lamson – We Who Are About to Die: Prison as Seen By a Condemned Man
Clinton Duffy was the warden of California’s San Quentin prison from 1940 to 1951. His 1962 book, 88 Men and 2 Women, focused on carrying out California’s death penalty after the 1938 introduction of the gas chamber. Before that, however, California carried out the death penalty by hanging, and We Who Are About to Die chronicles that–not from the point of view of the warden carrying out the death warrant, but from the view of a man whose name was to be on that warrant.

From the author’s foreword: “In a certain cell block in San Quentin Penitentiary there is a row of thirteen cells. In them live the man who are about to die, awaiting the summons of the hangman. For thirteen months I lived on that Condemned Row, under sentence of death by the State

“And in these pages I have tried to tell you about the Condemned Row, and the men who await death there, and the prison as it appears to us on the Condemned Row. I have written in the hope that you may perhaps learn for yourself something of what it is like to be a prisoner–whether condemned to death, or just a convict.”
