ABC – First Flight: Conquest of the Skies (2016)
Documentary | Size: 1.27 GB
First Flight is a documentary about the controversy over the world’s first motorized flight. Every school child is taught that the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright flew first in December 1903. But after years of research, Australian aviation historian John Brown argues that the German born immigrant to the US, Gustave Whitehead, flew two years before the Wright Brothers, in August 1901, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The film investigates this claim and shows how one individual’s research can throw conventional theories to falter. Who flew first?
Opposing Brown are historians supporting the official view that the Wright Brothers flew first. They claim that the 17 eye-witness accounts from the 1930s attesting to Whitehead’s flights are unreliable. We also discover that in return for the right to display the 1903 flyer in their museum, the Smithsonian Institution agreed that it will never claim that anyone flew before the Wrights. History may not be as certain as we thought.
A little more than 100 years ago, an invention wrote world history: Motorized flight changed our world more profoundly than almost any other technological innovation since the invention of the wheel. But who flew first? The Wright brothers with their “Flyer” in 1903 – as we know it from the history books? Or does this honor belong to a largely unknown German immigrant to the USA, the Franconian engine builder Gustav Weisskopf?
As early as the 1930s, the American journalist Stella Randolph, based on intensive research and interviewing eyewitnesses, made this claim and thus antagonized the Wright family. How reliable are these eyewitness accounts, according to which Whitehead took to the skies in his airplane, model No. 21, two years before the Wrights? And was Whitehead’s role downplayed by the Wrights, among others, for decades? Why aren’t historians today dedicating themselves to the new findings on a possible first flight by Whitehead? What role does an ominous contract that the Smithsonian Museum in America signed with the Wright brothers play?
With the help of historian and flight expert John Brown, the film searches for clues in Germany and the USA in order to solve the mystery of who was the first to carry out a motorized flight.
