Gareth Malone faces a challenge which will test him like no other – to form a choir in one of the toughest prisons for young offenders.

Chapter 1:
Gareth Malone undertakes a challenge to form a choir in HMYOI Aylesbury, a prison for young offenders serving sentences from four years to life. First he meets Governor Laura Sapwell, who feels that a choir might be a different and unique way to engage with the young men as part of a programme aimed at trying to prevent people reoffending. At the end of his first week, Gareth has met almost all the prison’s 200 residents, with 20 having expressed real interest in working with him.

Chapter 2:
Gareth desperately needs to expand his choir, with only seven inmates committing to the project and just three weeks before they have to put on a concert. He finds fresh hope in an encounter with a young man who has turned the story of his descent into crime into a song – and his example inspires others to share their own personal experiences. However, Gareth still needs voices, so tries to recruit some of the prison officers to help.
