The dynastic conflict known as the War of the Roses was steeped in treason and bloodshed. Three remarkable women were at the very center of this pivotal moment in English history.
Bestselling author and historian Philippa Gregory, who is the writer of the books which have inspired the BBC historical drama series ‘The White Queen’, presents a convincing and emotional portrait of three women at the very centre of the the Cousins’ rivalry of the fifteenth century, War of the Roses.
The War of the Roses was a family fall-out that raged for 30 years, scarring the English nation, yet ultimately giving birth to the Tudors a dynasty that went on to rule England and Wales for 117 years.
At the centre of this turbulent feud were three women. Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen, was the wife of Edward IV, mother of the Princes in the Tower and maternal grandmother of Henry VIII. Margaret Beaufort, the Red Queen, was the mother of first Tudor King Henry VII and paternal grandmother of Henry VIII. Anne Neville was the daughter of the Earl of Warwick the most powerful man in the country and wife of Richard III Englands most notorious king.
All three of these women were fiercely tied to their loyalties, pulled into the Wars of the Roses through the actions of the men around them, and were all rivals and even allies to each other at some point. These women were certainly at the heart of the wars which dominated the second half of the 1400s. Many historians have concentrated solely on the kings and nobles involved in the battles; however, recent research has prompted a great deal of interest in how the women behind these men influenced the tactics and alliances which changed English history. In this series Gregory will illustrate how this important part of our history can only be understood through looking at the women involved.

Episode 1 of 2
Philippa Gregory reveals the true stories of three remarkable women who lived through the treason and bloodshed of the dynastic conflict we call the Wars of the Roses. Gregory argues that it is impossible to understand this volatile and pivotal moment in English history without understanding the women at the heart of the family feuds that tore the nobility apart. They are as vital as any of the kings and nobles that conventional history concentrates upon. This was a battle between kin not countries, and the loyalties, rebellions, plots and betrayals of these women were decisive in shaping the history of England.
