English | Documentary | Size: 1.01 GB
In the summer of 1888, ads appeared for a camera with a curious name: The Kodak. Its inventor, George Eastman, had gambled on a revolutionary idea: photographs that anyone could take. Instead of the weighty cameras, huge tripods, fragile glass plates, and toxic chemicals used by professionals, the Kodak was small and simple. All amateur photographers had to do was point the camera and push the button.
Using some of the earliest moving images and scores of America’s first snapshots, THE WIZARD OF PHOTOGRAPHY dramatizes the life story of a visionary. Driven, demanding and even paranoid, Eastman fought relentlessly to create and then dominate the consumer camera market. He teetered on the verge of bankruptcy before two inventions-celluloid film and the Brownie camera-made him fantastically rich.
Eastman’s success in business didn’t carry over into his personal life. He gave Americans a way of capturing their most cherished memories, yet he enjoyed few himself. A lifelong bachelor, he was at times isolated and lonely. Controlling to the very end, he even orchestrated his own death.
