Spiegel TV – The Battle Of Lepanto (2002)
English | Documentary | Size: 906 MB
On October 7, 1571, the fleets of the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League, a coalition of Venice, the Papacy (under Pope Pius V), Spain, Republic of Genoa, Duchy of Savoy, the Knights of Malta and others, clashed in the Gulf of Patras. More than 50,000 sailors lost their lives. The bloodiest confrontation ever between Muslims and Christians.
As the sun sank into the Gulf of Patras on the evening of October 7, 1571, the waters of the Mediterranean were blood red. Over 50,000 soldiers lost their lives in the largest naval battle in world history. “No sooner has one fallen than another takes his place, and if he too plunges into the sea, which awaits him like death with all its armor, another follows him, without even allowing the dying man time to die,” the Spanish nobleman Miguel de Cervantes described his gruesome experiences of those fateful hours. His stories later entered world literature as the successful novel “Don Quixote.” 600 galleys faced each other on that fateful day.
The power struggle for sole dominance in Europe triggered the historic escalation. The Christians-blessed by the Pope as the “Holy League”-grouped their ships in the shape of a cross. The Ottoman Empire confronted the Christians with a crescent-shaped fleet. Early in the morning, the merciless carnage began. 250,000 people engaged in a bitter battle. The Ottomans seemed overwhelming in strength and size. But the “Holy League” deployed a new type of ship for the first time: the gun-deck galleass. This technological superiority proved decisive. Under the command of Juan d’Austria, the men of the “Holy Alliance” defeated the troops of the Ottoman Sultan Selim II. As a macabre symbol of victory, the severed head of the Turkish Admiral Pasha Ali was placed atop the Christians’ mainmast. For decades, underwater archaeologists have been searching the seabed of the Mediterranean for traces of the devastating battle. Jacques Cousteau and Peter Throckmorton had already hoped to find evidence of the terrible conflict. A team of renowned scientists discovered remnants of the naval warfare-a world-changing find.
The film accompanies an international expedition searching for clues in the Gulf of Patras. Modern technology supports this spectacular undertaking. Previously unpublished documents reveal fascinating details of the battle. Filmed at original locations such as Venice, Rome, and Istanbul, the film creates an impressive scenario that, through original galleys and replicas, brings the atmosphere of the events to life. The effective interplay of film clips, antique artworks, and elaborate 3D animations creates a detailed picture of that era.
