English | Documentary | Size: 1.43 GB
The greatest artworks in western civilization emerged from one of the bloodiest periods in history. This series explores the lives of three of the greatest artists in history – Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael – as they craft beauty from chaos.
How did Western civilisation’s most beautiful works of art emerge from one of the most brutal periods in history? The Renaissance was a time of extreme turbulence, betrayal, bloodshed and political upheaval. Yet it was also a time of unparalleled creativity.
This drama-documentary takes as its guide perhaps the greatest artist of the era, Michelangelo. It reveals how he navigated the violent reality of the times, and how his life intersected with two other geniuses of the period – Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. Blending expert interviews, dramatic reconstructions and immersion in wondrous works of art, this is a vivid journey into the highest of human achievements – and the lowest depths of treachery and turmoil.
With contributions from contemporary artists such as Antony Gormley, Alison Lapper, and David LaChapelle, as well as historians and biographers, this thrilling three-part series RENAISSANCE: THE BLOOD AND THE BEAUTY explores the lives of three rival artists who produced seductively beautiful works of art in the midst of violence, brutal political power struggles, warfare, and religious upheaval.
Framed through the eyes of an aging Michelangelo, whose long life spanned this extraordinary period, the series traces more than sixty years, beginning with the Pazzi Conspiracy of 1478 and concluding with the unveiling of The Last Judgement in 1541.
Through stunning visuals, compelling storytelling, and historical insight, the series reveals how these artists battled for favor, risked everything in service of their patrons, and reshaped the world’s understanding of art and the artist.
RENAISSANCE: THE BLOOD AND THE BEAUTY is narrated by Sophie Okonedo, the series features Charles Dance as Michelangelo, Jonny Glynn as Leonardo Da Vinci and Joshua Duffy as Raphael.

Episode 3: Redemption
As Michelangelo sets to work on the Sistine Chapel, his rival Raphael is working on the pope’s private apartments just a few hundred metres away. Each man is determined to outdo the other and win the favour of the pontiff.
But shortly after the completion of the Sistine ceiling, the Pope dies, and as the Protestant Reformation tears through Europe, art becomes a battleground for ideology and power. As the new Pope, Pope Leo X, seeks to reassert Catholic supremacy, Michelangelo is commissioned for a depiction of The Last Judgement, which will become both a political statement and a very personal expression of Michelangelo’s own spiritual redemption. Meanwhile, Raphael unveils The School of Athens: a work of iconic beauty that casts Julius II as the inheritor of the wisdom of the classical world, with the figures of Plato and Aristotle surrounded by great thinkers.
