After the great success of 14 – DIARIES OF THE GREAT WAR, a Season 2 international coproduction CLASH OF FUTURES with 8 episodes is telling the fate of extraordinary children, women and men from nine different European nations during the interwar period.
11 November 1918. The Great War is finally over. A new era is about to start. Amidst the grief, disappointment and old fears, new dreams and hopes are now emerging but so too are new hatreds:
CLASH OF FUTURES explores the dramatic era of the 1920s and ’30s. From the armistice of 1918, which marked the end of the First World War, to the declaration of war in September 1939, the beginning of the Second World War: an era during which there was an aspiration to create a new world, prosperous and at peace, but which provoked a new tragedy, seen through the destinies of people who were both actors and witnesses of the upheavals of the so-called inter-war period.
“Clash of Futures” tells the real stories of thirteen individuals who witnessed the end of World War I in 1918 and look to the future full of hope. The eight-part series follows the fates of extraordinary men, women and children from France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Austria, Sweden, Poland and the Soviet Union using their own diary entries, letters and memoirs. These are people drawn into the war by their convictions, who with their loves and decisions bring the history of Europe with all its contradictions to life.
They include Russian child soldier Marina Yurlova, Polish actress Pola Negri and sailor Hans Beimler. For all people in Europe, a journey into the unknown begins in 1918. The world is in ruins and peace makes Europe a laboratory of new ideas, new hopes and new social designs. The vision of a peaceful, democratic Europe is in competition with two other, extremely powerful utopias – communism and fascism. The political systems of democracy, communism, and fascism struggle for power and, above all, the right to define the narrative – often passionately, often violently.
The war of these three ideologies, these dreams of a better, more just world, the series tells through personal stories based on diary entries, letters and memoirs. What motivated people at that time? Where did they envision the continent’s future, and what dreams and hopes did they associate with the change they individually envisioned? The characters of the series make the history of Europe experience in all its contradictions with their dreams and fears, their love and their choices. And is this struggle for the future perhaps still relevant today, as Europe and democracy find themselves in crisis? In 1939, this story culminates in World War II.
