In 1900, a Daoist monk finds 50,000 ancient manuscripts sealed in a cave near Dunhuang, the ancient oasis town on the western edge of the Gobi Desert. From the 4th to the 14th century, Dunhuang bore witness to intense religious, commercial, and cultural exchange along the trade routes linking the East and West, known as the Silk Road. Delve into the dramatic story of the fortress city’s importance to the Silk Road, Buddhism, and religious art.
For over a thousand years, this mighty Chinese fortress stood at the crossroads of the Silk Road. And the city of Dunhuang itself was one of the centers of Buddhism. Several Chinese dynasties passed, and this strategically important location fell into disrepair. How did this happen?
This is the story of Dunhuang from forgotten people to great heroes in history, from the war of dynasties to the silk road’s prosperity. From the Eastern Han Dynasty to modern times, it focuses on the countless people that propelled history, revealing the legendary story of how Dunhuang was created.
When talking about Dunhuang, many people will think of its grottoes and murals, its role as a transit point for trade between East and West on the Silk Road, and its role as a crossroads of ancient religious cultures. “Dun” means “great” and “Huang” means “prosperous,” and Dunhuang, located at the edge of the Taklamakan Desert, was historically one of the four prefectures of Hexi. However, Dunhuang’s splendor was not achieved overnight, but through the years of construction and sacrifice by many generations.
“Dunhuang: Ancient Frontier Fortress” tells the story of how the legendary Dunhuang came into being by showcasing the stories of people from different periods and their relationship with Dunhuang, from a human perspective.
This series reveals how key generals, warlords, Buddhist monks, and China’s only female empress, Wu Zetian, shaped the turbulent history of Dun Huang, propelling it from a desert oasis to a vital trading stronghold and a major global center for Buddhism and religious art.
*Dunhuang: Ancient Frontier Fortress* is the first biographical, narrative-style documentary series co-produced by the China Intercontinental Communication Center, Tencent Penguin Pictures, and Singapore’s IFA MEDIA.
