In the early years of the 20th century Vickers was a giant of steel, shipbuilding and armaments which turned its industrial might to aviation. Supermarine, however, was the vision of just one man who wanted “to build boats that fly rather than aeroplanes that float”.
From these widely varied beginnings grew companies that would forever be associated with some of the greatest aircraft to grace the skies; companies that would merge to form arguably the most important force in British aviation history.
With unparalleled access to the archives of these great British companies, original filming and exclusive interviews, this unique documentary also looks at the great British aircraft designers such as Pierson, Mitchell and Wallis, covering both their most famous and lesser-known aircraft designs.
Vickers and Supermarine were responsible for the EFB 1 and EFB 5 Gunbus, the R100 airship, Vimy Bomber, Valentia, Vildebeest, Stranraer flying boat, Spitfire, Wellington, Warwick, Windsor, Viking, Viscount, Vanguard, Varsity, Valiant V-Bomber, VC10, Swift, Scimitar and many others. Many of these types are featured on the film with rare or original footage, saluting the very best in British aviation.
