On 4 November 1922, Howard Carter and his team found a staircase leading to Tutankhamun’s tomb. Everything that followed is history. Tutankhamun became a superstar and symbol of ancient Egypt, known to all as King Tut. What happened to the objects that had been there for 3,200 years?
The most precious of them were exhibited at the Cairo Museum. But the vast majority had, from the outset, been kept hidden from view.
Almost 100 years after the discovery of King Tut’s Tomb, it is time to tell the story in a new light. This film uses 2D and 3D imagery to reconstruct the tomb, the mummy, the funerary objects and the topography of the famous Valley of the Kings.
Ninety years later, for the first time, most of these objects are finally brought together in the precinct of the great Museum of Giza. Some of them made their way to the U.S.A. and Paris, where they were exposed at the Cite des Sciences et de l’Industries in the autumn of 2018 – and then in London, Berlin, Tokyo and Sydney.
This film is the story of the discovery of a treasure which we know only few artefacts. It is also an investigation, and these objects are presenting many clues along the way.
What do these artefacts tell us about the king and the period of his reign? In what circumstances were they discovered and taken away from the pharaoh’s tomb? These are some of the many elements of this documentary narrative.
It will soon be 100 years since the tomb was discovered. A number of research projects have been launched for the occasion, and in selected cities, audience records are being broken by a travelling exhibition of Tutankhamun’s treasures; at the end of the tour the objects will find their permanent place in the new Egyptian Museum in Cairo, overlooking the pyramids of Giza.
The film tells the story of Tutankhamun’s treasure and the latest research on it, and describes the preparations for moving objects to the new museum. In the process, new clues are emerging, in the light of which Tutankhamun’s well-known tale needs to be reconsidered.
