On Any Sunday: The inspiring film of a whole generation. Regarded as the greatest motorcycle movie ever made.
The sport’s greatest film. The sport’s most celebrated filmmaker. Hollywood’s favorite action star. And perhaps the sport’s greatest motocross rider. The names Bruce Brown, Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith will forever be etched in the annals of motor sport lore… along with three words: On Any Sunday.
ON ANY SUNDAY is the story of men who love motorcycles and motorcycle racing. You join Bruce Brown as he follows talented sportsman, Malcolm Smith, and the #1 professional competitor, Mert Lawwill, across 100,000 miles of motorcycle country. For many cyclists, a motorcycle means family recreation, transportation and work. For Malcolm Smith and Mert Lawwill, motorcycling means competition, skill, talent, endurance and sheer pleasure.
ON ANY SUNDAY, you can see men like Mert and Malcolm compete in Moto-Cross Racing, the most popular form of competition in America and Europe. Here riders must endure the hazards of a marked course across the toughest imaginable terrain in all kinds of weather. The more specialized Side Car Racing requires the skill of two men to maneuver the course- the driver and the passenger, who acts as the ballast, while hanging on for dear life. In yet another type of competition, Drag Racing, men accelerate their fuel powered bikes up to 165 mph in a quarter mile in less than 8 seconds.
ON ANY SUNDAY records Ice Racing in Canada at 20 degrees below zero where the main objective for both rider and spectator is to stay alive! At the Bonneville Salt Flats, you see Cal Rayborn successfully set a new motorcycle speed record of more than 265 mph. ON ANY SUNDAY traces the action from the straight line Bonneville machines to the explosive speedway races that take less than one minute to complete. Bruce films a race in the Southern California Mojave Desert where at least a thousand motorcyclists compete every Sunday of the year. The starting line is over one mile in length and the racers include doctors, accountants, lawyers and other professionals. At the end of the race, a trophy for the winner, and for the rest, the satisfaction of knowing you have done it. If your bike conks out, you may find yourself 50 miles from anywhere. In Elsinore, California, we see a quiet town which on one weekend a year hosts 60,000 spectators, while 1,500 racers fill the main street waiting for the start of the 100 mile Grand Prix. Malcolm Smith easily comes out on top and enthusiastic competitor, Steve McQueen, is not too far behind. Malcolm continues on to compete in the International Six Day Trials in El Escorial, Spain, a torturous event demanding a flawless performance over the roughest possible country for over 200 miles on each of the six days. He shows the world that Americans can ride with the best and is awarded a Gold Medal.
Races of speed and endurance are the most common and most difficult, but English Trials are considered to be the gentlemen’s sport of motorcycling. The object is to complete the course without letting your foot touch the ground no matter what you may encounter. Malcolm also raced in the Baja Desert along the length of the Baja Peninsula, a distance of some 1,000 miles; of all the races, this is the hardest for the men and the machines.
Like Malcolm, Mert and so many others will continue to ride and to compete “On Any Sunday” for the sheer pleasure of the ride.
