The Racing Scene is 90 minutes of racing action that takes you into the pit, the driver’s seat, on to the hazardous tracks at Sebring, Daytona, Limerock, St. Jovite and many more!
The story of James Garner’s year with his racing team, from the time he bought the car, and assembled his team through Mexico, England, Florida and Canada. Garner was a true motorsports renaissance man alongside other Hollywood A-listers with a penchant for petrol like Steve McQueen and Paul Newman.
James Garner was a huge star in 1969, coming off the TV series Maverick and roles in films like The Great Escape, Support Your Local Sheriff! and Marlowe, a movie in which he fought Bruce Lee. He also made the movie Grand Prix for John Frankenheimer, which was the sixth movie of his that didn’t do well at the box office. It hurt his career but gave him a passion for racing which he turned into starting his own crew and entering multiple races. This movie documents that time.
The film covers a wide array of different racing series and formats including sports car racing at the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring, Formula A (Formula 5000) racing at Lime Rock Park, desert racing in a highly modified Ford Bronco, dune buggy sand sessions in California with Garner at the wheel, and one of the biggest open-wheel crashes of the era. Great cars seen in the film include Lolas, Porsche 908s, GT40s, Camaros, Corvettes, Broncos, Mustangs, various cars on the tracks, the commuter Vette and Camaro that Garner drives.
The film features many of the leading drivers and motorsport characters of the time including John Surtees, Mario Andretti, Chris Amon, Roger Penske, Same Posey, Bud Morley, Chuck Parsons, George Wintersteen, Parnelli Jones, and many more.
The Racing Scene was a collaborative effort between legendary motorsports writer William Edgar and Andy Sidaris – the sports director of ABC’s Wide World of Sports. The film was shot during the 1969 season with scenes on both sides of the Atlantic, much of the film focusses on James Garner’s then-new team American International Racers (AIR).
